All Aboard the Bandwagon

Being a bandwagon fan often comes with a negative connotation. Whether it comes from people pretending they’ve been fans all along or never showing support because they were embarrassed to support a team that never did well. For me, it’s different.

I was born and raised in New York. I’ve traveled a lot and I don’t think it was until then that I fully appreciated being from New York. I love it. It’s my city and will always hold a very special place in my heart. It still gives me chills to see the skyline at night and I don’t think that’s a feeling that will ever go away.

Along with that feeling, comes New York Sports teams. There’s the Knicks, Rangers, Yankees, Mets, Jets, Giants, etc. In each, there is a very passionate fandom. While the dedication may vary, fans are what make it. While the talent of the athletes is obviously the main factor, teams wouldn’t be much without the fandom.

All that being said, let’s go back to my original comment about bandwagon fans. With all that is going on with the Mets, a lot of people are crawling out of the wood work screaming LET’S GO METS. Some people are offended by all of the bandwagon fans, but I view it a little differently.

Yes, I haven’t cheered on the Mets all along or all my life, but this is something HUGE that is happening. I am a New York fan. No matter whether you’re a baseball fan or not, you can’t help, but be excited for the Mets. A number of my good friends are Mets fans and have followed and rooted for them year after year wishing and hoping for a moment like this. And while it’s been a long wait, the moment is now that much sweeter.

So yea, I am rooting for the Mets. I’ve rooted for the Yankees. I root for the Giants and the Jets. I go to games and cheer them all on. I don’t claim to be a die hard fan, but I also don’t think I should be ashamed of cheering for a New York team that’s killin’ it right now. This is an exciting time whether you like the Mets or not. Whether you watch baseball or not. Whether you’re from New York or not. It’s a big moment, and I don’t think the Mets are complaining about people cheering them on who haven’t cheered them on before so neither should anyone else!

I’m very excited about this World Series and may the best team win and all but, let me just say, LET’S. GO. METS!

Lovingly,

Paige xx
